So Constance, tell us a bit about your background?
I started my career working in facilities actually. Started from administration and then moved to PA and Finance roles. I moved to a major bank, and that was my first experience of working fully in an operations role. I arrived here 6 years ago, working across the NFRC membership body and the competent person scheme (back when it was called Competent Roofer). For the past three years though, my role moved to focus on the Competent Person Scheme.
What prompted the move?
Three years ago we ended our relationship with a third party supplier because we wanted to run the Competent Person Scheme in-house. I was a key part of the project team who set up the internal systems and processes to run the scheme, and I’ve been a part of the team ever since.
What does your job look like day-to-day?
I’m responsible for making sure that the scheme runs smoothly for our contractors, so I ensure inspections and renewals are completed on time. I manage the portals that our contractors and inspectors use to upload works. Another key part of my role is maintaining our UKAS accreditation. When we brought the Competent Person Scheme in house it came with a lot of requirements to make sure we had documented processes for everything, and that we follow them to the letter. It suits how I like to work, and it puts all of my career experience to use.
How do you think your job directly impacts our contractors?
I don’t speak to contractors on a day to day basis, but my work impacts them a lot. Ensuring renewals are completed on time, that works listed on the system are completed on time and that our systems are working properly, all impact a contractor who is applying or maintaining their contractor status. I also work on the administration for RoofCERT which I know many of our contractors are registered for.
Tell us about your team.
We’re small and mighty! There are 5 of us, all with very busy roles plus a team of inspectors. Most of our contractors probably know Lynn. She’s the person on the end of the phone or email, making sure our contractors have everything they need. I manage the overall output of the team and make sure that everyone has what they need to do their jobs well.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve been here so long that I know the systems inside out, or it’s just part of my personality, but I really enjoy helping others to become more efficient. If there’s an easier way to complete a task, I’ll find it!
