A brief history
In 2006 NFRC gained UK government authorisation to set up the only Competent Person Scheme for the roof refurbishment market in England and Wales, administered by a third part organisation and known as CompetentRoofer.
In 2022 NFRC chose to bring the running of the Competent Person Scheme in-house, and rebranded to the NFRC Competent Person Scheme. Together with the NFRC trade body, we provide roofing contractors in England with one place to maintain their roofing competency and self-certify their roof refurbishment work.
What is the NFRC Competent Person Scheme?
NFRC Competent Person Scheme provides certification to the roofing industry as a Competent Person scheme operator, accredited by UKAS and recognised by the Building Safety Regulator for the replacement of roof coverings on all roof types.
When 50% or more of the roof is being replaced, it is a legal requirement to notify the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and comply with the relevant Building Regulations. By following the CompetentRoofer scheme rules, NFRC CPS registered contractors are authorised to self-certify that their roof refurbishment work complies with the Building Regulations. The Registered Contractor notifies CompetentRoofer when the work is taking place and once the work has been completed, NFRC CPS notifies the relevant LABC.
Not only does the NFRC Competent Person Scheme recognise the skills and competencies of professional roofing contractors but the scheme alleviates some of the hassle and cost associated with arranging inspection through Local Authority Building Control.
