About Mandatory Technical Competencies

Mandatory Technical Competencies are changing how competence is demonstrated across the industry. This page provides answers to common questions and guidance on what you need to do next.

What are Mandatory Technical Competencies?

Mandatory Technical Competencies (MTCs) are being introduced across the entire construction industry, in response to the outcomes of the Grenfell Inquiry and the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022.

For the roofing industry, these changes are designed to ensure that all individuals working on site can demonstrate that they are competent to carry out their role.

Why does this matter to me?

Everyone on site from Principal Designers to installers will need to be able to provide  clear evidence of their competence to carry out their role on each project. Avoiding this could result in hefty fines and prosecution from the Building Safety Regulator.

What is changing?

Being competent is no longer based on trust and experience alone, you need to be able to prove it. This might be by sharing qualification certificates, CPD, knowledge test results or statements of experience.

Good record keeping is going to become fundamental to your business. But don’t worry, we’re here to help.

What are we doing to support you?

To help you prepare, we are introducing new systems and processes, including a new competence management platform and improvements to our inspection processes.

We will provide checklists and guidance to support you in maintaining good records - which is going to be key to your future success.

What happens next?

We are implementing Certchain as our new competence management platform. When the time comes, we will be in touch with all Nominated Competent Persons to create their account.

How can I prepare for MTCs?

The best thing you can do now, is to send us details of your Nominated Competent Person if you haven’t already - including any copies of their qualification certificates or statements of experience.
